In the last quarter of the 5th century AD, the king of Kashyapa built an impregnable fortress and his palace on the rock, where he lived with 400 concubines. The rock was surrounded by a moat with water, which was filled with crocodiles. Endless gardens were built around the rock, in which almost the world's first fountains were beaten. The subjects of the dance are borrowed from various features of village life - harvest dance, jug dance, etc. Dance performers perform in traditional peasant clothes - short blouses and long narrow skirts. In the Kandy area, on the contrary, dynamic dances are popular, without which no festive event can do. Kandian dances involve men who have been professionally trained in dance techniques for many years. The dancers perform in red and white costumes, with numerous bracelets and bells on their hands and feet. Another kind of traditional national dances of Sri Lanka is magical dances associated with ancient beliefs that still exists on the island in our time. The Sri Lankans attribute all the misfortunes, ailments and troubles to the wrath of the gods and the evil will of demons. If the disease is caused by the wrath of the gods, a bali rite is performed to appease the god. The rite is accompanied by dances, sacrifices and spells.
18:00 Temple of the Buddha Tooth
Around 540 BC, the deceased Buddha was cremated and four teeth were taken out of the fire, which were carried around the world. The tooth was brought to Ceylon in 371. After several centuries of staying in India, the shrine was sent to Ceylon IV by the ruler of Kalinga, who was defeated in wars and feared for the fate of his state. The relic was transported to the island by the ruler's daughter, hiding it in her hairstyle. This tooth has long been attributed to magical power: the one who owns it, had full power. Therefore, the Buddha's tooth became a possession of the royal dynasty. The original place of its storage was the city of Anuradhapura, then the tooth was moved to the city of Polonnaruwa, and at the beginning of the XVIII century it was transferred to Kandy. Here in the temple we will be able to see a magnificent museum, which exhibits a variety of donations donated to the temple. Then the Dalada Maligawa temple was built specifically to store this shrine. Read more about the Temple of Buddha's Tooth...
